when they turn red, most peopel pick them when they have just a little green left, and let them ripen in the window or something, if you want to pick them before they are ready to eat, take sme of th vine with them, this helps feed the tomatoe nutrients whiel i is ripening and makes for better tomatoes

so wait then. you are not hurrying somewhere, are u?
btw green tmatoes are little bit toxic, just like potatoes when they turn green, not something that one would wish to eat regularly, so i pick them while green only when the season is totally over or when the plants has been broken by hail or something, simply when i dont want to waste them - then i pick the whole plant and leave the tomatoes to ripen indoors as much as possible, eat the ripe ones and make chutney of the half ripe and green. i would not purposely pick green tomatoes - i alwayys have some at the end of season

Here in the south; we pick large green tomatoes & make those southern goodies called FRIED GREEN tomatoes. Need a recipe? Just ask.
I'm proud you've raised since large tomatoes; I'm not quite so successful. (;-)

Your large green tomatos would ripen off the plant, but will taste better and sweeter if not picked until fully ripe, or close to it.
