So many liberals are hung up on the minimum wage thing you'd think that all minimum wage earners are liberals. Yahooland liberals at that.

It's so touchy-feely to say that "everyone should make a living wage" but what does that even mean? Am I responsible for paying people more money through my taxes to make sure this happens? Is the company I work for responsible for paying people who are too unskilled or unmotivated to get a better paying job more money just so they can continue to be unskilled or unmotivated?

By the way, less than 2.5% of HOURLY workers actually make minimum wage. When you factor in salaried and commissioned workers it's less than 1% of all workers that make minimum wage.

If somebody makes minimum wage and that person wants a better paying job all they need to do is acquire more skills and make themselves more valuable to their employer. Nobody handed me a guaranteed raise, I spent YEARS trying to prove my worth to my employer so I could ge

And instead of having the market dictate reward for performance you want to legislate it. That's crazy. You're willing to let the same nitwits in Congress who can't pave roads decide what a "living wage" is? Great strategery.

The truth is that almost nobody makes just minimum wage. I work in a company of almost 200 people and NOBODY makes less than $9.50 per hour. Nobody.

Here's a question for you ... Since you're wanting the minimum wage increased to a "living wage" but you're failing to factor in all the welfare and food stamps and all the other assistance people like this usually receive, are you willing to scrap the entire welfare system in trade for a $3 per hour increase in the minimum wage?

*** Also, what color ribbon do liberals wear to show support for people making minimum wage?

I think you hit the nail on the head. Most of them people who are making minimum wage are thoes in high school. They don't have any bills to worry about and that is great for a small business to hire people without costing them an arm and a leg. Also they don't need to pay them health insurance with helps keeps costs down.

I don't think that people realize that business will have to raise the prices of their goods to make up the cost of the increase in minimum wage. The increase didn't do any good with helping people get ahead. It made it for thoes who are already making $9 an hour have a harder time because the cost of goods are going up and their income isn't. Liberals just saw $$ and followed the dollar signs without thinking about it. Thoes costs of goods along with costs of shipping thoes goods all get passed on down. The trucker wants more pay due to the increase of diesel and the shippers want more money to pay the truckers then they are going to have to raise their prices to pay for that and now for the minimum wage. want want want....that is america for ya.

I am a stay at home mom of 5 children and my husband is working to provide for us. Plus we send our children to a private school. I know if we can do it most people can. People need to seperate their wants to their needs. I want that boat, I want that snowmobile, I want that world vacation etc then they demand that they increase minimum wage because people are having a hard time paying for it. Also people think that just because minimum wage is going up that everyone will get a raise. Nope! Just the minimum wage. So thoes making $9 or $12 and hour will not get a raise.

For one, it is not that a lot of ppl work for minimum wage. It is that minimum wage is the base that all wages, especially hourly, are set.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with being 'touchy-feely'. That is your personal dislike and also your own opinion that it applies here.

You seem to be lacking the grasp on the basis of why our society is considered an advanced one and not a third world country. That is because we don't have poor barefooted children running through the streets begging for money. (I have seen this with my own eyes in other countries)

The reason you don't see this is because we try to take care of our less fortunate ppl. This does not mean give them some grand life but it means to help them survive and not live on the streets.

Some ppl like you think you shouldn't be obligated to take care of the less fortunate. I say to you then do not live in this country because you are not worthy of it. There will always be ppl who are less fortunate and need assistance. The choice is whether or not we choose to be an advanced civilization and aid these ppl.

Some ppl are dealt a better hand from birth. Some squander chances. Others just aren't too bright. Some ppl are meant to be poor. Others not.... That is the way it is. What makes us different is not punishing our poor for being poor. If you are going to accept the prosperity of this great nation then you have to be willing to pay for the poor that makes us greater than a 3rd world country that let's their poor starve and live on the streets.

While I make above min wage as well, it is time for it to be raised. In the 50's and 60's it was possible for one person to work and support a household. That is almost impossible today. CEO's used to make 20-25 times what their lowest paid employees make, now that figure is 200-300 times higher, have their jobs got 200 times harder? When companies like Kodak in the late 80's lay off thousands and thousands of workers, to make higher profits, after years of record profits, something is wrong. If you took one million a year off the average CEO and spread it out among the employees of the company, it would have a tremendous impact on their lives, and others as they would have more to spend, but minimal if any on the CEO who would now have to "struggle by" on 4 or 5 million a year. If salaries were increased, by the way, fewer people would need or qualify for welfare. Why are you so against a raise in min wage.

Answer me this. The price of gas goes up. Food prices go up.
Your bills cost more, your rent increases & your salary stays
exactly the same - how are you supposed to make ends meet?

Ok, so now, you are working 2 jobs just to have the gas to get
to work & buy food, too.
Where do you find time for continued education? And who pays
for that?

No, I'm not minimun wage, but, have the capacity to care about
other people. Esp. the people who have children that will be
our future.

The biggest problem with this, is that, health insurance is no
longer affordable to these people & our emergency rooms are
in a crisis from it.

Because neglect & apathy have consequences, of which are
beginning to surface.

It's sounds like you live with your parents & have no concept
of the real world.

The answer it's relatively simple, it has to do with the philophical beliefs of the Democratic Party after FDR.

Since 1896 the Democrats have been the more liberal major party (in the modern American sense of the word). The pro-working class, activist philosophy of Franklin D. Roosevelt has shaped much of the party's agenda since 1933; this is particularle shown in his New Deal Coalition that controlled the government into the 1960s.

Raising the minimun wage is a pro-working class measure that takes part in their government program because of their political philosophy.

I am lucky to make a very good income, but none the less I try to be empathetic. It could be seen as a weakness(my empathy) but it is important. But do I do anything about it? No, and I do consider myself very open-minded IE Liberal. That my friend is our failing, a lot of talk and no action. I should and could do more for society. We all should. I like your answers to people, and even an apology here and there. Try to be level headed in your vague rants and try to offer a solution. Or your a problem too. Have a good one.

Because it is just a little easier getting an extra $4000 a year. Also, "get a better job" is not always that easy.. Maybe if we give people with billions of dollars more money, rather than giving extremely poor people more money, that will be better for those people in poverty?
