Well, each drive must have 15 % free space for proper defragmentaion, and the drive that contains the windows xp installed must have 25% of free space due to temporary file storage. Also remember that each drive should have a SWAP file ( in your case 2.5 GB to be exact). This ensures proper gaming and sometimes file copying and better application handling.

I currently have a similar setup as you for my now defunct desktop, but now server. When I was running Windows XP Home on it, I had a hard drive that was 120 Gigabytes. It all really depends on what you plan on doing with the computer. If you're going for games and media, then more hard drive space will be good. However if all you're doing is browsing the web and not saving anything you can go a little smaller. I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than 40 GB nowadays. Hard drive prices are real inexpensive now, so you can up the size for a few bucks more.

Get at least a 40GB! because the programs will need space to install once you got ur system running!! But Minimun required space! is like a gig! but i dont think you can get any of them around! or at least from a store! Spend like 50 bucks for a 40GB or 15 or 20 bucks more to get a 80GB! Buy the OEM version! dont waste your money on retail versions! and buy them from www.newegg.com it will be at your door step less than 4 business days!
