Brandi and "me" are correct. (That just sound's odd...)

Anyway, the value of this self-mailed copy is that it preserves a written record, with government time-stamp as of when you had a copy of the work in question.

The biggest difference between this type of copyright and formal registration is the damages. A violation of a registered copyright under the Copyright Act gets you statutory damages. Otherwise, you need to prove that you actually lost money because of the infringement.

Fro simple text-based words, the copyright fees for formal registration are only $30. And it's just a 1-2 page form. So, your husband may want to think about looking into actually registering the works with the Copyright office.

A 'Poor mans copy right' is when you enclose a copy of the song poem or what ever in a envelope then mail it to your self. When it arrives do not open it, save it then when the time comes to prove that you had the ideal first take that unopened postmarked envelope with you. The dated post mark proves when you came up with the idea.

My understanding of such copyright is this. When he finishes writing something, he should make a copy and mail it to himself. It is not actually a copyright, but it would hold up in court so long as it was not opened since it would have been postmarked and the document would be sealed inside.
