It really depends on the oil. You have to understand that gasoline is actually an oil in itself. If you add a thin oil such as 10W30 to a full tank it may be fine whereas if you have very little gas in the tank and add gear oil (80W90), it is going to be considerably worse. Alternatively, if you put diesel in, it would smoke a lot and run poorly. Also, you have to take into account how much oil went in and how much gas is in the tank.

As for your fuel system, the filter SHOULD be fine but after you have run out the oil, you should get it changed. The injectors may also be fine.

It is possible to run many cars (with some conversion) to run on vegetable oil so if it was this type of oil that went into your engine, it should be fine, after a great deal of smoking.

I would suggest you get some octane booster, some engine system cleaner, and some Jerry cans of new gas. Some tanks have drain plugs that can be pulled out to easily drain the tank. you could try this and then use the new fuel, cleaner, and octane boost to get rid of any other oil that is in the system.

in a typical car the motor just wont start but in many 70's sports cars it will explode! if you do get oil in there have it towed to the mechanic and the have to clean out ure gas tank and in most cases ure engine it will cost around $150

mess up the gas filer , fuel injectors, best thing is to remove tank and get it flushed out
