Too many new suburban developments are square miles of nothing but houses. So if you live there then you will need to drive in order to buy anything. Should we change that, in put in corner stores so that people can get basic groceries from a walking distance away? It will improve the quality of life, and decrease fuel consumption.

I think that would be a marvelous idea. That's the advantage Europeans have in dealing with high fuel prices. My friends in the UK can get all their basic essentials and groceries within biking or walking distance of their residences. I, for one, would love to have a neighborhood grocer.

Disclaimer: I come from a long line of independent grocers - my grandfather owned a small grocery store, as did his father and grandfather before him. It's not my field, however, so the only way neighborhood groceries would affect me is by lowering my fuel costs.

I think corner stores are nice, but where I live most of the old ones have been reduced to cruddy liquor stores selling cheap beer and cigarettes. You can't get any real groceries at most of them unless your list includes slim jims, Naty Light, and a pack of Reds.

I like your idea, but I don't think the superstore is going anywhere.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on that one. What a waste of time and gasoline to have to drive into the city to buy milk and bread! I live in a small town so it's not an issue for me but if I had to fight traffic and whatnot for some last minute items, I wouldn't bother.
