Prooving that the earth is not the center of the universe and that it rotates around the sun. Thoe simple as it seems today, this fact sparked the fire for future generations of wonderers to explore and ask question that were forebidin a few centuries ago.

The best research is preceded by new instruments. The great sky survey maybe very valuable later in comparing.
The little gems at the top of Mt. Palomar, Kit peak, Mauna Kea and Hubble Space Telescope to name a few, contribute so much information. And the rise of cheap computing. There are rooms where people use to sit and "calculate" for a month to work up a night's viewing. Now done nearly free in hours/ minutes.

I really am amazed when I think of all the technology and mathematics spawned as byproducts of celestial navigation.

A timepiece accurate enough to determine longitude wasn't available until James Cook's expeditions occurring from 1768 to 1779.

So in less then 250 years, we have gone from not being able to find our position at sea, to the exploration of space.

And the measurement of time is intrinsically bound with the study of physics, culminating in Einstein's theory of relativity which revealed that space and time are inextricably entwined.
