I have a cable modem. I generally leave my computer on but it goes into sleep mode. So, I guess I need to know if hers would work (have internet access)
1) with my computer off, but connected to the cable modem and 2) if her computer could access the internet when my computer is in sleep mode?

Basically the router is the one distributing the data & the card on your wife's computer will receive the data being transmitted from the router. In the sense if your computer is off.. it should work... In what ever mode considering that the router is the one throwing out data to both of your computers.

have you ever referred to as Linksys? they have exceedingly good tech help. also, the IP handle of the Linksys would properly be conflicting with the IP handle of your Verizon DSL modem. connect decrease back to the modem (with out the router) and get your IP handle. i imagine the Linksys is 192.168.a million.a million in the journey that they are an same, then you actually'd pick to modify the IP handle of the Linksys router.

Yes on both accounts. When you connect the router, it becomes the gateway (or connection point), not the PC. You could totally diconnect the other PC if you wish, without effect. On the other hand, if you were using "Internet Connection Sharing" on your PC, then no it would not work. Since this is not the case, the you will be good to go.

Good Luck,

Yep... when you get the router... you hook the modem to the router and the router up to both computers. As long as the router and the modem are on she's fine, because your computer isn't standing between her and the router :D I think that's the same router my husband and I have.... works fine for us :D

you said that you have a Linksys router?.....if that is the case the router should have its own external power source, so even though your computer is connected to the router, it doesnt have to be on in order for the router to operate. as long as you have the router plugged in and it's connected to to either a DSL line, etc, your wife should be able to access the internet from her computer.
