I don't recall Messing saying the socks had anything to do with tradition, but Amy suggested Pub Golf (a drinking game) for the theme of the hen party (the 'hen' and 'stag' parties were tradition). Argyle socks used to be a staple of wear to a golf game before it became 'Americanized'. The socks were brightly colored because it was a 'hen' party. Men golfers tend to wear more sedate colors.

The argyle pattern is said to have been derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll in western Scotland.

If you notice, Messing and her best girlfriend are wearing argyle patterned tops. (Actually a lot of them were)

Is this what you needed?
