A Geo Metro was a real economy car. I owned three of them and enjoyed them. One was an automatic and I used it for delivering newspapers. Worked great! I think most of the answers before mine were given by people who never owned one.

Geo is a name licensed and manufactured by General Motors. The Geo line is generally low-quality with many safety and cramped-space issues--and a lot of import parts. The Metro is their little Honda Civic DX wagon rip-off...they're highly unsafe in crashes and tend to crinkle like a tin can when hit.
I've worked on a Geo Tracker. While everything in the engine bay is easy to get to, you are SOL if you need to get to the fuses to test or replace them. And don't get me started on the steering and suspension components. Nasty things.

It's a sister car to the Suzuki Swift and the Canada-only Pontiac Firefly. Production began in the fall of 1988 for the '89 model year. Chevy sold the car under its name from '98 until its demise five years ago. They were built in Canada. It was offered in a three- and five-door hatchbacks. A sedan was offered, replacing the five-door in a 1995 redesign. A three-door model was still being offered as well.
