there are different shapes of plates and they are called customized.
but in commercial point of view. It would be cheaper to make round plates that customized. you see if you'll gonna make a moulder, it would be easier, faster and cheaper to make round moulders that square ones.
so if you are a business man, why would you make customized plates if you can earn more profit in conventional plates.

If you think about it, if you're making plates out of wood (as many people used to), it's coing to be much easier to make them round because that's the way wood grows.
With the invention of the potters wheel, clay plates were likewise much easier to make round.

plates can come in triangles, squares and even star shapes they are just to put food on a to be eaten. it just looks better round
