as a researcher, I would say that it's absolutely not a 'trendy' phase, but can lead to amazing breakthroughs in modern medicine. But, like anything of this magnitude, needs to be carefully thought out and planned and steps should be taken to protect the confidentiality of everyone involved.

You should save your baby's cord blood because it could one day be used to treat a family member from a terminal illness or cancer. It can even save your babies life if it gets cancer or any other sickness... So yes it is a very good idea for you to save it... No matter how much it cost for you to save it!
And since the stem cells come from the umbilical cord, they are not controversial like embryonic stem cells.

I did not save my baby's cord but I wish I did. It seemed like so much trouble and I didn't want to have to worry or bother with it right after the birth. But my friend saved her son's cord because her mother-in-law has Parkinson's disease and they thought one day it might help her. That was so smart. It's worth the money if it will save your baby life or that of a family member. I regret my choice and will definitely do so for the next kid.

I'm not sure how useful this is, however, I do see a trend as well. Perhaps they are hoping that some stem cells will be available inside this usually-deposible item with the after-birth.

The best cells for stem cell research are in there. If you are opposed to stem cell research, then don't donate.
If you are, then donate.
If you don't know, do some research.

it's not necessary, but if you have a family history, you or the father, of hereditary terminal illnesses, like hodgekins, it's worth the investment.
