I have very blonde hair and blue eyes and when I was younger I simply could not tan. However since I have got a little older my skin seems to tolerate the sun alot better. Still I dont particularly like having a tan and i refuse to let my skin burn. It just does not flatter my hair colouring. I have now learned to embrace my whiteness and celebrate the fact, that at 50 I will hopefully continue to have good skin, less wrinkles and no skin cancer. I'm glad I dont have enough melanin in my body. It could save my life in the long term.

Some people do not have as much of the natural tanning pigment or melanin as others. Most of this is predetermined by heredity. For example, my husband is very fair skinned and only gets red or freckled. He is 33 yrs old and has never had a tan in his life.

I tan beautifully but I do come from a Mediterranean family.
I don't understand people who will sunbathe for hours on end only to turn red.
Being tanned isn't everything though, I've seen loads of really attractive men and women who are pale, it looks better than a fake orange tan anyway.

Many people are unable to get a tan because their skin is unable to produce the chemicals that use the rays the sun produces to change the color of their skin.

I get a tan very easily. My sister however gets burned. She is very hard to tan. We will always go swimming and stuff, and I get tanned and she gets burned. It is lack of melanin in your skin, and lack of coloring pigments.

Yah. Some people are just white forever. They will darken with the sun but will never be what we call tan.

I think you will find people who have red hair have very pale skin and only burn and then peel. I have inherited my mother's fair skin as she was a natural redhead, so it takes ages for me to colour even though I'm a brunette.
