Today the Republicans blocked a vote to raise minimum wage to 7.25 an hour. The minimum wage has not been rised since 1997.

WASHINGTON - The Republican-controlled Senate smothered a proposed election-year increase in the minimum wage Wednesday, rejecting Democratic claims that it was past time to boost the $5.15 hourly pay floor that has been in effect for nearly a decade.

The 52-46 vote was eight short of the 60 needed for approval and came one day after House Republican leaders made clear they do not intend to allow a vote on the issue, fearing it might pass.

The Senate vote marked the ninth time since 1997 that Democrats there have proposed _ and Republicans have blocked _ a stand-alone increase in the minimum wage. The debate fell along predictable lines.

You might want to learn a little about business and economics before you run around spouting lies about Republicans. When the minimum wage is raised, the only people who truly lose are the people who make minimum wage.

That is because the wage increase would not take place in a vacuum. It would take place in a free market. So, if businesses are forced to pay additional thousands of dollars a week in labor, they will raise their prices accordingly. The products and services most affected are those most used by the "less than rich". For example, fast food, pizza delivery, etc. Who do you think partakes in these products and services most often? Billionaires? So you get your $2.10 an hour, but your cost of living increase would eat up most of, if not all of that, and possibly more. The way to increase your wage is through continuing education, dedication, and hard work. Someone making minimum wage should evaluate what they could do to get a job that pays more. That's what everyone else does. I don't make now what I made at my first job, and the government had nothing to do with it.

The lesson here is do whatever you have to do not to make minimum wage.

In an attempt to keep small businesses alive the minimum wage was not raised. Many businesses are hurting already and if it went up to much many people would not have a job at all. There is no set good or evil, you have to weigh your options and pick the least worse of two evils. In my area where tourism and farming are the two largest main things that the economy depends on many small businesses would suffer from an increased minimum wage.

This is a ridiculous question. It's so touchy-feely to say that "everyone should make a living wage" but what does that even mean? Am I responsible for paying people more money through my taxes to make sure this happens? Is the company I work for responsible for paying people who are too unskilled or unmotivated to get a better paying job more money just so they can continue to be unskilled or unmotivated? There's absolutely no logic to this question.

By the way, less than 2.5% of HOURLY workers actually make minimum wage. When you factor in salaried and commissioned workers it's less than 1% of all workers that make minimum wage.

If somebody makes minimum wage and that person wants a better paying job all they need to do is acquire more skills and make themselves more valuable to their employer. Nobody handed me a guaranteed raise, I spent YEARS trying to prove my worth to my employer so I could get paid more money. And it worked.

And instead of having the market dictate reward for performance you want to legislate it. That's crazy. You're willing to let the same nitwits in Congress who can't pave roads decide what a "living wage" is? Great strategery.

The truth is that almost nobody makes just minimum wage. I work in a company of almost 200 people and NOBODY makes less than $9.50 per hour. Nobody.

Here's a question for you ... Since you're wanting the minimum wage increased to a "living wage" but you're failing to factor in all the welfare and food stamps and all the other assistance people like this usually receive, are you willing to scrap the entire welfare system in trade for a $3 per hour increase in the minimum wage?

I am a republican and I am against it because it raises the cost of consumer goods and services. If you do not want to make minimum wage then get an education, I assure that if you are making minimum wage as an adult the government will give you money to go to school and better yourself.

If you want to make more money you are going to have to earn it, no one is going to hand it to you.

I would be willing to assume that you are for socialized health care and more welfare.

Why not raise the minimum wage? Here's a good reason why not.

If Taquandra working at Doc Midget's Widget factory has to be paid $10.00 an hour, what's to keep Doc Midget from moving his widget factory to Ecuador or Mexico where workers can be paid $10.00 a month?

Seems to me the senate was trying to keep the jobs of those "average citizens" here. Use your head.
