The word root "mamma" (part of mammal and mammary gland or breast) means nipple in latin....the nipple is the quasi central PART of the areola (the pigmented portion in male or female mammals breast) that can become erect and stick out during either sexual arousal, cold or breastfeeding. There are circular and longitudinal muscles in the areola that help the nipple relax into the areola and become flattened (as when we are warm) or become contracted-erect when cold, etc. In the nipple are the lactiferous DUCTS that can allow milk to be delivered during suckeling. It is within-under the areola skin that the milk SINUSES are located. Babies should not suck on the NIPPLE. They should have their mouth-gums further back on the areola (plus nipple) and the sinuses under the areola so they can help with milk ejection when their gums knead the sinuses. Babies who just suck on or gum the nipples block the ducts and therefore milk flow. And of course they will get mad and cry when no milk comes out. Plus, this can make the nipples bleed-bruised-sore-cracked and all sorts of pain! Not many new breastfeeding mothers know this. Call LaLeche League or a lactation consultant for help wih nipples problems, esp if nipples are INVERTED-don't become erect, sink into areola! It is rare, but it is NOT a reason to NOT breastfeed
technically the nipple can be called a teat too, (not tit, that's slang)

The proper word is areola.......so ask away! I know I am right because before I became a chef I was a nurse. So have faith that it is areola.
