I would go with a shotgun, probably a pump, with a magazine tube extension so that it holds 7-8 shells. I would load it with OO Buckshot. The shotgun is the best because the shot spreads you could take out more than one target at a time if they are standing close to each other.

A pump shotgun is probably the best for 1 or 2 home invaders. Usually the racking of a 12 Guage pump is enough to deter any attackers. But for several invaders I would suggest a backup semi auto rifle with high capacity mags or a full auto sub machinegun if you live in a state that allows personal ownership of such weapons like the HK MP5 or UZIs. Although these can be quite pricey but well worth the money if your life is at stake.

Get a handgun and learn how to use it properly. Go to a range and practice. Shotguns are slower to reload and don't hold as many rounds. Any other weapons (spear, knife, etc.) are useless against someone with a gun.

have you heard molotow cocktails?
Fill empty glass beer bottles with gasoline, and put some rag to the top of it. then seal it with a electric tape or something. Have them ready in some carryable bag, and you`ll have a firebombs that will burn some of them, and the rest of them most likely get scared. after lighting the rag, Just remember to throw them so that they will brake in the front of them, so the gasoline splashes over them too.
A knive and a cross bow would be handy too, as a spare plan.

I agree about the dog. While he's getting their attention, call the police and get the guns. Make sure you have lots of ammo. Slip out the back and call in an airstrike on your house. 10-15 people? I would move.

Any handgun at least .38 cal, but no larger than .45 cal. But ownership is not enough. Learn how to shoot the thing. Learn when to shoot and when not to shoot too. Its not enough anymore to just start blasting, and the law may arrest you for defending yourself if you do so indiscriminately. Gone are the days of shoot him and drag him inside.
My gun of choice is a .45acp. Yeah its an ancient round, but brutal. If you shoot someone with one of those he's going down. Shoot him in the arm and it may take it clean off. If you are going to shoot someone you are not playing around. Its life or death, so take him out.
