I think they might have spoken surfacy with each other when around their groups so that they were at least speaking to each other but Molly Ringwald's character and Emilio Estevez' character would know that their friends would not accept the others.

In the schools where im from there probably would have been a few fights between the cliques. But the 5 would have stayed friends.
