IMHO only former professional players from world class leagues should be commentating on the world cup.

They want to appeal to as many viewers as possible and not alienate any of their traditional audiences. In the US, so few people (at large) follow soccer that ESPN believes incorporating more recognizable reporters and commentators will encourage more people to watch the programming.
Most sports fans in the US know who Julie Foudy is because they are familiar with the US women's soccer team winning (with Mia Hamm, Brandy Chastain, etc.), so she is a logical choice. When Americans think of soccer, most would probably think of the women's team in the Olympics and their World Cup events.

If you are talking about the woman who talks after many of the games, she was a professional soccer/football/futbol player. I believe that she has played in the World Cup before, and her team won. If that is not good enough for you, then I don't know what is (if I am incorrect on this, please correct me).

Hi...It is interesting seeing a woman talking about "Football"...I do think she needs to read more books on the game and see more games played and not just in the USA...she is some what uninformed...

Oh, dude, don't be so harsh. Everybody has a take on things. Plus, in America, you don't have to have ANY qualifications about ANYTHING to be on TV. If only people who knew what they were talking about appeared on American television, there would be so much less controversy...and we can't have that now, can we?

I agree with you...
It takes a lot to know what you are talking about in such a sport like football.
There are hundreds of people that could do it better than her.
