Definitely look into the graphics tablet and start with Wacom. I use one at work [for Web and graphic design] and one at home and have for years. It's like having a piece of paper and a pen. Once you get the hang of it, you will find that you have more control with the stylus pen than with a mouse.

The Graphire starts around $100, and Intuos will start around $220. The bigger the tablet, the more they cost. If you use Photoshop quite a bit or do anything professional, you might want to seriously consider the Intuos. Otherwise, the Graphire should suffice.

Also, look for them on eBay. The highest prices are always listed on the Wacom site. There are other makers of graphics tablets, but Wacom is usually rated the highest. I'm including some links that might help you research this a little more.

If you are ready to spend a few bucks, then a graphic tablet is the best way to go for most kinds of artwork and photo editing. You can do pretty much anything you can do with a mouse and much, much smoother and faster. From as little as $100 and then on up.

Wacom makes one. I know there are others.

You can also use a trackball but it's kind of lame.
