The watch does not need a "machine" to open the back, but may need a special wrench designed to open watch backs. Wal-Mart, and most any jewelery store, will gladly change a watch battery, but they usually charge you to replace batteries from a watch bought elsewhere. It shouldn't be very much, though, as watch batteries are fairly inexpensive. I have used Wal-Mart to change the battery of a watch before. They used the special wrench and charged a very reasonable fee. In general, if a store has a jewelry department that sells watches, they also sell and change watch batteries.

All answers you got now are good.
Personally I fix that problem ,I use to have a good daily watch
And I be having the same problem off you .
Now I go to Wal-Mart and buy one off there watch at $7.77 0r $9.77 . Usually that watch will be good for ! or 1 1/2 years.
When the watch his finish ,I put the watch in the garbage and buy a other one. You look at the price of the battery and that come very close to the Wal-Mart watch. Well in Canada .The pricing I give you come from Canada. Check the price at your place and see the difference. Who know.
But like I say all the answer you got are good.
Have a great day and good luck

Some times they turn off. Hold the watch upside down and put your thumb on the back and try to rotate it so that it turns toward you. Really, it's much easier to just take it to the jewelry store and have them put in the new battery. If you bought the watch at Wal-Mart, you can have the jewelry department there do it for you. Regardless, it's not expensive--well under $10; I can't remember exactly.

Go to Radio SHack, but the cell type that it says on the back of your watch, Timex M cell for example. Then ask to borrow a small scewdriver at the counter. They will have one. Then pry of the cover where there is a small slit. Then replace the battery and pop the cover back on. About $5.

You can use a knife blade to pry it off. That usually works fine, but different watches are made by different jewelers. Some manufactuers require that you send them back to them for battery replacement.
Walmart is always a easy way to change them as well, if they have the right tools, and its free. But like I said, some require that they are only changed by the people who make them.
Good Luck!

Best bet is go to a jeweler. Some watches once you have the back taken ouy it is really hard without a tool to get it back on.
It happened to me. I have a Fossil and Timex I had to take them both to a jeweler. You can pick an inexpensive one. I went to a mall and paid $5.00. Hope this helps.

I've always just taken my watch to a jewelry store (even my cheap watches) and for the price of the battery, they'll also change it.

A jewelry shop will do it for free...I don't recommend Wal-Mart either. Take it to a reputable jewelry shop, buy the battery through them, and they will do it for free.
