My HSG was unpleasant, but that was my fault. They gave me an antibiotic to prevent infection. I didn't eat when I took it and threw up all over radiology.
Anyway, an HSG feels just like bad cramps. You'll notice it when they shoot the dye up into you. I didn't even need to take a pain reliever.
Here is a little known fact and hint. After an HSG, you may experience some leakage of dye, so they recommend that you wear a pad. Bring your own or they will give you the hospital-issue pads, which are like wearing large, uncomfortable pillows.

A HSG is a picture of the uterus and tubes and can show up problems inside them. A special dye taht can be montored on an X-ray screen is slowly injected into the uterus and should pass into the fallopian tubes. If it fails to do so, there may be some damage, distortion or blockage. A similar procedure is sometimes done with ultrasound instead of X-rays.
Many women don't notice pain, whilst others feel a small amount of cramping afterwards. Some doctors will recommend that you spend the rest of the day resting.

I had a HSG and had no discomfort at all. I had several people in my fertility group who have also done this and one had some blockage and found it painful (the discomfor ended quickly) and 2 others just said they felt "crampy" another was like me and had no discomfort. Check with the people who do the test and ask if they reccomend taking ibuprofin before the procedure.
