Given the current situation it's not a bright idea to carry any weapons like guns or machetes with you. Guns cannot be used by civilians in Sri Lanka. If you want to you will have to get a license. If you are searched at the air port and weapons are found on you,you will be treated as a terrorist.Trust me I am a Sri Lankan.

I'd go with the gun. Smaller, more concealable, more effective, keep the baddies at a distance.
