Women ovulate about 2 weeks (usually 12-16 days--*not* always 14 days!!) before their *next* period. You get a lot of different answers because most people only know the *average* (which is wrong for *most* women) and not the true answer. Saying women ovulate on day 14 of their cycles is as useful as saying that women are 5'4" tall. It's an average of *all* women, but it's wrong for *most*.

As for when you can get pregnant, it is in the days before ovulation. Sperm can live for up to 3-5 days in the female body, but the egg only lives for 6-12 hours (up to 24 occasionally). It is physically impossible to get pregnant less than 10 days before your period would have started, although it *is* possible to get pregnant a week before your period is *due*; this is a sign that ovulation was late, and your period would have been late, too. After ovulation and fertilization, it takes at least about a week for the fertilized egg to get to the uterus and start implanting. Once your period has started (or once the hormones have already gone too far in preparing for your period), a fertilized egg can't implant. There's no place for it!

Everyone is different. In a perfect world, we would all ovulate on day 14. However, some people ovulate on day 8, some on day 21.
To determine your ovulation date, start taking basal body temperatures.
Your Basal Body Temperature (BBT) is taken orally with a special BBT thermometer. This type of thermometer is graduated in easy-to-read one-tenth degree increments. Your temperature must be taken before any activity, first thing in the morning, after at least three hours of consecutive sleep. There is some disagreement about how to take your temperature- either orally or vaginally. My doc said to do vaginal temperatures. However, you're looking for a change in temperature, so if you pick a method, stick with it and be consistent.
Your BBT is lower during the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle, prior to ovulation. The presence of the hormone estrogen keeps the BBT low. Typically it will range from 97.0 to 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Immediately following ovulation, progesterone "turns up the heat" a bit, and there is typically a rise of at least 0.4 to 0.6 degrees until the time of your next menstrual period. This temperature rise will let you know that ovulation has occurred.
The next month, your ovulation should occur around the same date and let you know when your most fertile days are.
You want to chart all of your temperatures. Some people download graphs off the internet. Some people use online services like this one:

the average time that women ovulate is 14 days after her period starts, - half-way through her cycle- BUT it is sometimes different if your periods are irregular, don't occur every 28 days and so on and so on.

when you ovulate, your vaginal discharge becomes thicker and more plentiful, and you are usually more horny. That's always a sign for me!

There is also a way to figure out by your temperature, try googling basal body temps, and that might show you.

If you are having trouble getting pregnant, talk to your dr, he will know all the other things about this! :)

one other thing, if you have sex every other day, it helps your chances, because if you have sex every day, you husbands sperm count will be lower thus lessening your chances. Sperm can stay alive in you for about 5 to 7 days, so dont' worry if you arent' having sex every day, there should be a plentiful supply of spermies swimming around at all times! lol!

Most women ovulate on day 14 of their cycle. Day 1 being the first day of your period. If you're trying to get pregnant, your best bet is to (if possible) do it every day from day 7 to day 14 since sperm can live inside a woman for 7 days. If this is not possible, the 2 days before day 14 would be best, this is what worked for my husband and I.

This is my standard answer......... go get a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive. My Doctor recommended it to me and after 1 year of trying I got the book. It worked the very next month. It turns out that my timing was wrong due to mis-information. I hope it helps you, too! It's not only about getting pregnant. It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths!

MOST women ovulate 10-14 days after the first day of their period. I was not one of those women. All four of my pregnancies were conceived within 2 days before the start of my period. That's the norm but every woman is different.

14 days before the first day of her next period. NOT NECESSARILY 14 DAYS AFTER PLEASE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU LISTEN TO THIS MISGUIDED INFORMATION

Women who have regular periods can easily calculate when ovulation occurs. Ovulation almost always happens 14 days before you expect your period. For a woman who has 28 day cycles, that would be in the exact middle of the cycle, 14 days after the last period and 14 days before the next one. Women who have 30 day cycles can expect to ovulate 16 days after the last period, which is 14 days before the next one.

Women who have irregular cycles cannot predict when they will ovulate. In retrospect, they can calculate that ovulation occurred 14 days before a period, but that does not help in planning a pregnancy. Women with very irregular cycles may need to use ovulation predictor kits to determine when they will ovulate. Ovulation predictor kits detect the rise in hormones that occurs before the egg is released.

In the middle of her cycle - 14 days after the first day of her period (this is also 14 days before her next period starts).
