I don't think they are necessarily angered by the truth, but by the comment. Most people who are fat or whatever know that they are. Firstly, they don't need to be reminded. Secondly, MOST of the time, calling people fat is used as a derogatory comment, as if they are trying to put that person down.

On one hand, I hate people who refuse to acknowledge the truth, even when it is right in front of their face. On the other, if I am fat, I probably know I'm fat, and you can be both honest and tactful simultaeneously. If I'm fat, it's probably something that's bringing my self-esteem down daily and I don't need you reminding me of the obvious.

Why not Google "politesse"? Or Jack Nicholson's famous line, "you can't handle the truth." Draw a cartoon of Mohammed asking if there are any virgins left, stick it on your t-shirt, and hang out in a Muslim country. You will quickly learn the meaning of "offense." But I agree, people taking offense over words are full of themselves. Now sticks and stones . . . that's another matter.

Because sometimes the truth hurts.
There are also nice ways of saying something sensitive like that to someone. You don't need to tell someone their fat. They obviously know that already.

Not at all. I love truth. But......I also hate rudeness. Duh. (I'm not fat, by the way, in case you're wondering, but happen to be an amateur triathlete). It's not just American culture, it's human nature that we should not be abrasive to people without reason. That's why, partly, because they're mad. They already know they're fat, Einstein. So....in their mind you're calling them stupid, too, for you having to inform them of this fact. And worthless.... and....so on, so on, so on.

I am not offended because your opinion of me in no way affects my self esteem. So, there, but don't be rude, you will have no friends if you keep it up, buddy!! Do you need to tear others down to build yourself up?? Or are you just trying to be funny? I am going to believe it is the last question. Good luck.

No. I like to be told the truth. I'm only offended when I'm lied to.
However, the truth does not need to be told in a nasty way.
