Do you live in an appartment or a house?

There's a flower that if you plant it on the perimenter of the house, the insects and ants won't go on the inside territory. It looks like the ones they grow at the gas stations--yellow, fluffy-puffy flower :) Ask a nearest flowerist for any additional information on the insect/ant repelling plants. If you live in an appartment, check the appartment for something sweet that was spilled and washed (even if it's washed away completely, the scent is still there no matter how small), and have the landlord examine everything in the complex. Plant couple of flowers in your appartment. The scent should be able to divert the insects (even if it's a light scent) and make them either leave or go in another direction, but not those who live inside :) This way the ants will be safe and everyone will be healthy, and you won't have to worry about killing anyone or anything.

No matter where you live and if the ant problem is severe call in the Bug Exterminator or have the landlord call them, they might know how to solve this. This is a serious problem and they have to do something about it.

Cheap fix and it works, go to Walmart and buy some 20 Mule Team Borax put it in a cheapo squeeze bottles for ketchup that you can purchase at a dollar store, put the laundry soap in it and apply around the base borads kitchen cabinets where ever you see the ants, leave it down for a few days until you no longer see any signs of the ants, they will carry it back to their nest and it will kill them, when you no longer see any ants vacuum up the excess Borax, and use the rest of the box to do your laundry

Ants are attracted to water or a food source, especially sugar. To pevent ants you need to eliminate both. also ants may be repelled by garlic powder, but is best placed outside along ant trails. What type of ants do you have? Once you know your enemy, then you can plan your attack.

Humane? no...
But those ant "traps" that give them poisonous food to take back to the queen and the rest of the colony really work well.
Or you can bomb them..
