I agree that people want the easy way of giving birth? C-Sections are said to be more expensive giving more profit to the hospital as well as the doctors.
Some doctors push the procedure.

This procedure should only be used if there is a problem with giving birth through the birth canal.

Inducing labor is something also used many time for the convenience of parents and doctors to fit childbirth into their schedule.
But I do notice it gives the first time mother a little less stress because they now the baby is coming that day and are not worrying about false labor or any other worries new mothers have. It gives them a little sense of control about what is about to happen.

Hullo! I'm one of those induced-labor-ended-in-c-section people.

Inducing labor shouldn't be done for convenience. I was having hard contractions for a week and was not able to keep anything down--not even water--without vomitting it back up. Every night I went to the hospital for a shot of demerol and phenegrin to help eliminate the nausea and the pain. It would last a few hours, I'd get a little sleep and a little food, and would wake up for 20 hours of the same agony before repeating the process. The week after that started, they decided to induce my labor. It was the 24th. My due date had been the 16th.

When they induced my labor, I dialated rapidly at first, and then stalled. My mother never dialated past a 2. I dialated to a 3.. and then a 4.. and then a 5... and then a 6... and then 7... I made it to 8... then almost to 9... and then I stopped. When I hit 9, they told me that the way I had been going, the baby ought to have been born by 6:30 or 7:00 that night. I was thrilled.

At 10:00 they came into my room and found that the baby was distressed and my body refused to dialate any further. They would not let me push. I was whisked away for my emergency C-section.

Trust me, it's not a joyful way to go. The thought of the surgery makes me sick to my stomach, and when I feel the scar and the stitches I want to throw up. Not to mention I didn't get to hold my baby until 2 hours later.

It was everything I never wanted, but sometimes it's neccessary. My mother would have died in childbirth with me had she not had a C-section. 36 hours of hard labor, and she only reached 2 cm!!!

Sure, it's not perfect. But sometimes it is a lot safer than the alternative.

Doctors now know that the placenta can get old if you let the pregnancy go on too long, and it will get calcium deposits that deprive the baby of nutrients, thus the reason for many inductions. With modern technology progressing so rapidly, we are learning more and more about how to make sure a baby is born as healthy as possible.

There is also the concern that the amniotic fluid drops as the pregnancy goes past 40 weeks and there is a risk the baby could cut off its oxygen flow by compressing the umbilical cord.

For both of the above problems, ultrasounds are used to diagnose the problem, yet nobody has a problem with using them during pregnancy...amnio tests can be dangerous when performed and are expensive, yet they are now a routine practice too.

Regarding C-sections, again, there are many reasons to have one, the majority being medical dangers to the mom or baby. My first baby stopped tolerating labor, for whatever reason, and his heart rate dropped to below 50 BPM. If I had had him 25 years ago, he might have been born dead without the monitoring to determine a C-section was necessary. I also have a tear in my uterus that scarred over, we found this during an ultrasound. So I am going to have a c for this delievery to make sure it doesn't rupture.

It may be we are seeing more and more of these procedures done, but I think its because we have learned more and are having healthier babies and safer pregnancies and deliveries.

Although C-sections are major surgeries sometimes they are necessary. They are harder on the mom but much easier on the baby. There is less of a chance of umbilical strangulation or so I have been told. However there are risks to the mother in that she could hemorage which would cause her to have to have everything removed.

Are too many of them being done? I think that we (meaning society) has gotten to the point where we want everything and we want it now. C-Section should never be elective, it should be theraputic. I think if the insurance companies stop paying for elective C-sections then women will allow the baby to come when the baby is ready.

It really pays to do your homework and take control of your own destiny when giving birth these days, and when possible to have an advocate there with you who will not be in excruciating pain and/or anesthesia ;-) Whether it is for financial gain, laziness, convenience, etc. etc., I think there is a very serious issue these days with doctors doing unnecessary labor induction and c sections. My wife gave birth to two daughters, 11 years apart, and says her experiences were entirely different, largely because the first time she didn't really know what she was getting into, and the second time she had done her homework and we did it our way. In hindsight, she's quite certain she was induced her first time because it was late on a Friday and the doctor wanted to leave for the weekend.

I think it is another way for hospitals & doctors to charge patients for things they dont need. I also hope the doctors are looking out for the best interst of the baby when doing this but natural birth should be just that the old," O Crap my water broke" ,"this babys coming". These fairly new "techniques" are short cuts to what has always worked.
Makes you wonder if all the kids born with defects and or learning problems are a result of a doctor of parents wanting the baby out sooner?????

Well like me, Im 41 weeks over due... and going on 42 weeks. I am on the waiting list to get induced. My body isnt wanting to go into labor by itself... and believe me I have tried these other things to maybe help myself along... but nope! So I would hope they arnt being just scheduled for no logical or medical reason while Im sitting here on the waiting list to get induced. There is reasons that some people need these done and pre scheduled.

i substitute into induced no longer through creating use of the pitocin drip yet through creating use of the pill they positioned contained in the back of your cervix, affectionately called "the bomb" through creating use of the nurses because it particularly works ninety 9% of the time and the confusing artwork hits like, nicely, a bomb! i will't say if induced confusing artwork damage more advantageous efficient than organic and organic as i have were given in uncomplicated words had one toddler. All i will say is not uncomplicated artwork hurts. The degree that it hurts might want to be distinct for each woman. some women persons have worry-loose labors and do not pick soreness killers. Others (like me) have sturdy labors and choose the soreness killers. I think it's unnatural and wrong. The child should enter this world when it wants, on its own terms not because mommy has an appointment at the beauty parlor the next day and Flo is going to be there to dress her hair. Unless there's a good reason, it pisses me off.
