I think soccer should have been named "football" as well, because MOST of the game is played with the foot. Why not call what we call soccer "football" and what we call football (american football) soccer? It avoids calling the game "handball" like has been previously mentioned, especially because you use more than just your hands in american football.

As to WHY we don't call it football, I don't know, but it would be more logical. Too late now...

It is funny how people refer to Americans as barbaric because they play American football but football (soccer) is the only sport that prohibits the use of hands, the only appendage that separates humans from lower animals.

I never understood why people think we have to conform to what the rest of the world does, especially as we're the group who takes in a good portion of the people the rest of the world doesn't want.

Don't like American football, don't watch it. But we're not changing the name because the rest of you get your panties in a bunch over it.

The foot is used all the time. Hand ball is not an option. We are Americans and we will call it what we want.

In "Football" the rest of the world uses their head, knees, and chest, and 2 guys on the pitch are allowed to use their hands. Why not "Bodyball"....?

Because they lack common sense. I never understood why they chose that name actually. It's more like rugby than anything else.

And anyway if they can't call it Handball as the name was already taken, why did they call Football.
Wasn't that name already taken too?

And what about this:

'American' (US) football not only is played (mainly) with hands, also the ball is not "spheric", as is supossed to be a ball.

will be much more apropiate to cahnge name to "Rugby alike, US rules" or something like that.

I'll answer this the same way I answered the last time somebody asked this stupid question:

Try kicking a field goal, extra point, punt, or kickoff with your hands and see what happens.

The foot is used frequently as well.

Handball was already taken.
