im trying to reinstall windows xp home edition.When i go to set-up a messgae tells me that my \system32\hal.dll is either corrupt or missing and i need to download a copy of that file.Honestly I think somethings wrong with the cd.It seems to be scratched big time.Now,if i get a new cd and reinstall again will everything be alright,would i get all my files back that i need etc.thanks in advance.right now im able to use pc...just cant reinstall using my installation cd...thx again

If you get a new CD, it could lead to more problems if it is not the EXACT same pressing / version.

If you don't have a copy of the same exact version, go get the CD you have resurfaced. Buffed out so it can be read again.

Take it to a video rental store and have it buffed out. But that's not your problem. Here is how to fix your issue

you could set up win from a diverse CD you gained't loose your records. the version out of your previous CD and the hot one is purely the registration huge form and installation key(if both are WinXP homestead) you could set up it, you gained't loose your records.
