I was once told, bya woman at a bar, that I looked a lot like Tom Cruise. I walked away from her (I don't like Tom Cruise, his looks, acting, politics or world views, or the fakery of scientology). I don't think it is good to say things like that. if you think someone is good looking, just say that.

I never mis-understood that gal in the bar. she was, in a round about way telling me that she thought I was good looking. However those that use this type of 'compliment', fail to accept that not everyone has the same opinion of beauty. therefor telling one person that they look like someone that the other emight think is ugly is telling that person that you think they are ugly (you think I look like HIM/HER?! THAT SUCKS!!). You seem to expect those receiving the 'compliment' to understand and yet you fail to understand the flip side of the same coin!

honeslty it dependes on the persons,..the giving and the one receiving, like with what happened to you, she was giving it as a compliment...which mean she thinks tom looks good as with you looking like him so are you,.....but on the other hand your case about tom,....well you wouldnt see it her way,....but if you think about it, although you dont think tom looks good, but a ton of women/girls think he is,...well theres your answer.......it would be the same if i told a woman she looked like lets say angelina jolie,...well everyone knows she is concidered one of the hottest women alive,...so in turn the woman would be one of the hottest women alive....in my point of view of course.......but think about it,....you were at a bar,...she was probably trying to get laid (no offense to any girls/women who go to bars or not) and she figured that was the thing with you not know that you dont like tom,....

You're being too picky and seeing things that aren't there. She was just being nice and complimentary in a way that seemed appropriate at the time and she had no way of knowing you'd take such offense at it.

well, maybe the lady really admires tom cruise, and her saying that you look like him just means she admires you too.. you don't have to take it all personally
she's just saying you look good =] (even though you don't think he's so good looking.. other people do)

I agree~I was told that I looked like Meg Ryan ~ she looks goofy to me! I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder~~~~

EEww i hate it people always tell me i look like aginlina jolie or jessica beil i think they both are not that pretty... oh and one time i got mary-kate and ashley.... Plus i really dont see it in me anyways.. people are crazy
