I am a teacher and I will be the first to admit that we are babysitters----not in a bad way though like you are thinking of. We watch and care for our students as if they are our own. Somedays we are thier teacher, counciler, nurse, friend, driver, caretaker, etc all at once. Some of these students the only adults they can trust or look up to is thier teachers. Beleive it or not there are alot more parents out there who would rather stick up for there kids and be there friends then be thier parents--and we are to try and teach and disipline them---if you think we are just overrated baby sitters-----i challenge you to become a teacher and see what all the hardwork is about in this feild----( and I will add without the pay and regonition we desearve---but thats not why i teach) Also there are some poor teachers out there yes---but there are also poor doctors, mechanics, lawyers, tellers, casiers, etc--- Hope this anwers your question.

Oh man don't get me started on teacher. I think some of the teachers are really good and that they're teaching everyone one what they need to know. Now on the other hand some teachers just tell kids the answers and dumb things down just so they dont have to take the time to explain or anything and when they do that they just lets the kids do whatever they want. Not all teachers are like that but more and more are becoming that way its rare to find a good teacher now a days

Years ago, there were these T-shirts around that had printed on them a list of awe-inspiring jobs, followed by "... just call me a teacher". It's so true. A really good teacher could do just about any job, so diverse are the skills acquired from being around young people. It's not just the pupils who learn something new every day. The best teachers are the ones who are still open to learning themselves. The people I work with, on the whole, are. So yes, I do think teachers do a good job. Because I am one and I work damn hard!

I am constantly amazed that this question even exists! Do you realize that you are able to write this question and read the responses because of your teachers? I am blown away on a daily basis when I walk around my school and see the UNBELIEVABLE work that my teachers are doing! Also, if you want to look at teachers as "babysitters," let's pay them like that! Parents, get out your checkbooks and pay each teacher, oh, let's say, $2.50 an hour (pretty low in babysitting/daycare terms, right?). Each teacher teaches at least 7 hours per day and has 20-30 students per day. . .Hmmmm, that is $350-525 per day. Now take that times the MEASLY 200 day contract for the year. . .that is $70,000-105,000 per year! Know any teachers who make THAT??? I suppose we SHOULD add at least $.50 per hour per student for those with a master's degree. . .YOU do the math this time. And if you CAN--thank a teacher! (Even if you use a calculator, because you couldn't without your teacher's instruction!)

The majority of teachers I know do a tremendous job. There are exceptions to every rule, but that is true in any occupation.
Teachers are expected to educate, but in today's world teachers must take over many of the jobs that parents used to do. Teachers who do their job well, make it look easy. I believe that is why many people feel that teaching is a snap. I challenge those who feel that way to volunteer in your local public or private school and get an idea of what today's teachers really do on a daily basis.

This depends on the teacher as well as the environment they have to teach. I think the main problem is with teachers unions, as it its almost impossible to fire a bad teacher. One would think the teachers union would police themselves, if they are really there for the kids. This will never happen.
I have had a lot of really good teachers, but there like anywhere there are the few exceptions that should be eliminated.

there are all kinds of teachers - hard working ones, lazy ones, devoted ones, etc. in general, teachers are underpaid, do too much overtime work (marking etc) and gets responsibilities pile onto them on a regular basis. Also, some parents who may be busy with work, leave the teachers to teach their kids everything - they forget or don't realise that the teachers are there to guide their kids and they (oarents) too have the responsibilities to supervise their own kids with their homework etc. i guess my answer is yes, teachers do a good job but they are also expected as babysitters. Teach ONLY if you really LOVE teaching - don't do it for the money as teachers are usually underpaid. If you have thinking of teaching, do try it otherwise you wont know if it is meant for you. good luck!

We work extremely hard and get very little credit for what we do. I could do a similar job in the private sector and get paid 50% more, but I choose to do my bit for society. I also find it really rewarding.
I wish that sometimes people didn't constantly go on about the holidays (often needed after 8 weeks of 12 hour days) and supported those who work in education. It's shameful to hear about parents who attack teachers because they make (fair) comments about their children they don't want to hear. We are all well trained and committed and want the best for the young people we teach... sometimes we need a little more support instead of criticism to give them the best best chance possible.

I think teachers have the HARDEST jobs with the lowest pay and the highest expectations. I don't know too many babysitters that have master's degrees. With special needs, bullying, globalization, technology - teachers have to spend their time staying current - there is no easy teaching job out there!!!! I will agree that there are slackers in every profession, but teachers are usually highly educated and well qualified to do what they do.

I think teachers have a very difficult career. I thought of becoming a teacher in my earlier days, but glad I didn't because I see them as professionals caught between whining parents and school administrations that don't support teachers. Incorrigible kids seem to get away with way to much and when there's conflict, it's 'blame the teacher'. I think they earn their money.
