best bet is just to ask him...but i know this really isn't a good answer, because if he isn't, he might be offended.
watch him watching other people. does he look at pretty girls as they walk by, or does he just ignore them? does his gaze linger on guys? just get to know him.

Obviously, you don't know him well enough to know whether or not he's dated any other girls at your school, so either one of the two of you are new to that school, or maybe your school just has so many students that you always see new people. Regardless, the easiest thing to do is ask around if anyone knows him and if they know of anyone he's dated, but be subtle, you don't want to look overly enthusiastic. Sounds juvenile I know, but if you're interested in him and he's NOT gay, then he might get offended and you can forget dating him.

well i would not ask him because if he is or isnt then you might lose all chances of ever going out with him. what i would do is flirt with him for a while and then ask him out and if he says no there is even a better chance that he is but he may just not be interestedin you!!
