If you mean expansion joint in brickwork. the answer would be yes they are nessary. It depends on the application. A 20' brick veneer front on a house you dont need, but if its a larger building then it depends on your code where your at. Anywhere from 16' - 24' . the joint is basically a flexable material such as cauld that will allow the building to settle or move without causing dammage to the brick or its structure.

You need expansion joints in brickwork because the bricks expand in hot weather and the walkway or whatever the bricks are used for would buckle.

expansion joints or movement joints should be no more than 6m apart horizontally and have debonded ties every 450mm vertically
