If you speak spanish it would be easy for you to learn portuguese. I speak spanish and I can understand a lot of what portuguese people say. A lot of words are the same, some differ slightly in pronunciation.
Best player in the world in spanish would be "mejor jugador del mundo" and in portuguese would be something like "melhor jogador do mundo. This is just a quick example to show some similarities.
Yes Ronaldinho speaks spanish.
Here is a link to an interview to prove it:

Spanish is very close to Portuguese. The best way is taking classes and visiting a country where people speak Portuguese, so you can practice with native people, it is more fun and easier to remember.
about Ronaldinho, I think he speaks a Portunish (Portuguese + Spanish)... heheheh

No, Ronaldinho doesn't speak Spanish. He speaks Brazilian Portuguese. If you speak Spanish, he will understand. In general, Brazilian can understand Spanish without problem. However, Spanish speakers don't seem to understand Portuguese as good. Weird. I speak Portuguese and now learning Spanish. It's very easy. In fact, if you speak at least two languages, you will find the third language very easy to learn.
Tips for learning Portuguese. Learn northern accent if you have Spanish in you, otherwise please speak like the southerners such as Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo people. It sounds sexy. lol

Spanish is pretty close to Portuguese, and it would definitely be easier to learn Portugese if you speak Spanish, but if you don't already speak Spanish, it would be easier to just start off learning Portugese rather than learning Spanish and then Portugese

I would agree that Spanish is closest. Portugese, Spanish, Italian and French are all "romance languages" (i.e. they are derived from Latin).
