Do you have a programming background at all? What type of game are you trying to make? JAVA doesn't lend itself very well to making certain styles of games.
I'd suggest reading Beginning JAVA by Wrox Press to first get a firm grasp on the language.

The book Java in a Nutshell is good for beginners you can also try sun.java.com. They have some stuff on there as well.

its an object oriented programming language similar to C. you can learn it in most colleges or some high schools.
