anyone who handles snakes knows to stay their distance, especially when they aren't certain what type of snake it is.

get a pole with a hook of some sort. Like the ones you always seebeing used with poisonous snakes.

Don't be a fool, call emergency (American 911), animal control or the county department of police.

But if you must do it on your own...
Try 5 or 6 feet of PVC just long enough that it woun't bend with a dob of weight on the end of it, otherwise use a wooden or meal dowl. Even a length of bamboo would work. grab something from the local home repair store that is designed to hold weight in a hook shape and duct tape the two together in some fashion.

The hook alows the handler the ability to scoop and it gives soemthing the snake will enevitably spiral around. Grab a pillow case load it up and then call the animal control department.

Do not touch the snake directly with bare hands, use leather gloves, for safety reasons of snake bite and because if it is a wild snake you never know where's it's been or doing.

I noticed on some of the programs where snakes are caught at a reasonably safe distance that use of a length of PVC pipe with a small rope put into it in such a way as to create a loop at the "other" end is used to safely catch snakes. It takes some practice; and, I have not actually 'caught' one with this method. Depending upon the type of snake, it could be safe to simply pick up. It is usually too close whenever I "know" whether one is or not.

I would try to use the net or call a local reptile catcher. Most likely, he just got in there by accident and may already be out. To find a person in your area try www.anapsid.org there is a list of people all over the country who pick up reptiles and such.

The long handled butterfly nets are what we use to get them out of the pool. We got them at Target I think.
