A pack of the clay you use to take a cast of the baby's hand and footprints. I got this and when I look at it I can't believe my toddler was ever that small (or quiet lol). You can get this in a lovely presentation box with all sorts of bits and bobs
An album to put in all the baby bits as he grows up like photos, scan pictures etc
Something for the mum - everyone buys for the baby but no-one ever remembers the mother
Add in a book of vouchers from you where you will do certain chores for her like ironing, babysitting so she can have some sleep, cooking dinner (the plus side of this is you get to have time with the baby)

Neal's Yard do some lovely hampers for mums and newborns - they are aromatherapy products. Lovely blue glass bottles and gorgeous lotions and potions that are lovely to use and therapeutic for mum and baby. I personally feel that it's more important to get something special for the mum. The baby will get plenty. They have a website, but I don't know the address, a Google search will give you the answer. Hope that helps. :)

I am sure your friend must have already taken care of the stuff which baby will be needing soon after birth . You can gift something which will be of use after 3-4 months like baby carrier or walker . Some have tradition of gifting silver glass or silver bowl & spoon set . Remember the age old saying 'born with a silver spoon'.
That will be something non-perishable .

depends on how much you want to spend. you could get a tiffany rattle, or maybe be different and get a post preg spa massage for mom. I will tell you though most mothers love getting diapers because you need so many. I really like getting gift card because anything that I didn't get I can go back and get it later with someone else's money. I think that is the best idea. There is nothing worse that getting a gift you didn't need and not getting one's you did.

You could make your own mobile thing for the babies crib and put funny animals on it.
Oopps! I saw someone at the top has the same answer so here's another. Buy a lamp and decorate the shade yourself, that's good right?

i don't know if this will help but the thing i treasure most is the 3d foot and hand that my stepmum and i took of my boy when he was a few days old. she made a latex cast of it and later made me and my partner keyrings with resin. if you look on ebay under alginate you should find some kits. alginate is the stuff they use to take dentist moulds you would also need plaster of paris and a bit of patience!

If you know the babys name you can go to babysrus.com(click on the personalized items tab) and order pacifiers with the babys name on them.....the only down fall is the baby may noy suck that kind of paci or not suck one at all....they are the mam pacis and i would say 90% of babies use them...however there are lots of cute personalized things to get other than pacis

Either one of those kits that takes the kids hand or foot prints - its something that can be tresured for ever OR open a savings account (you would need a birth cert and everything for that so my first choice is easier).
Good luck :-)
