Just skip the scan then. Hit F2 or hit a key to just bypass it and let it start Windows instead.
You might want to reinstall windows and back up your data if the problem persists. Normally when a scan disk fails, it means something more than just a file error has occurred. If you need help with reinstalling Windows, then just contact me.

I have seen this message when the computer was not properly Shutdown. If you are just turning off the power when you are done, that is the "improper shutdown" the message is mentioning.
You should always use the Start/Shutdown procedure when you are done. Windows then will do a nice cleanup of your session, and you will get a nice startup next time!

Boot to your Windows XP CD and select Repair, from what you have described a protion of either you windows system files is damaged or a physical part of your hard drive is damaged. The Repair function from the boot menu will fix the software problem...the other is a tad more severe.

I've gotten that before too. I just let it run until it finishes. Yes, it takes awhile. But if you leave it be, it WILL finish & then load Windows.
