I just completed a one month long analysis of this very question. First, I went on line to research what was available and what the costs were. I found most deliver cubside and many you have to construct yourself anyways. Then, I went around to all of the home improvement and shed stores in our area to price them. Everything is an option and you pay for it. Want a window, want double doors, want a cupola, want vents, want installation, want it painted or want double doors? The price ticks up substantially with each option you choose. Finally, I had my husband get a book of shed designs at the Lowes and we priced out what we wanted at the home improvement stores. Any of the pre-designed, ready to assemble sheds require site preparation and that is not included in the assebly price. In the end, in terms of the financial investment, designing and building our own shed saved us A LOT of money. At Lowes, we simply made a list of all the supplies we needed and they shopped the store, loaded it on pallets and delivered it all right to our home. We paid $55 for them to load, deliver and unload, but it was worth it.

Now, in terms of the site preparation. That has been a nightmare because we had irrigation pipes, sprinkler valves and the electric all around our shed site. Plus, we had to dig out quite a lot of dirt to level the site. But, it has to be done whether we build our own or purchase a pre-made one.

In the end, I get all of the features on the shed I require, it will be unique and well built. Most of the pre-fabricated ones we saw were a little cheezy. Overall we saved about $550-600 doing it ourselves, but who knows what new aggravation the project will entail!

I wanted to build an outdoor shed for my kids when I came across Ryan's shed plans collection.

I've used ito to build a 8x10 shed with some modifications. Clear directions and materials list assisted me, a non-builder, in completing the shed I wanted. It's great even for a novice builder like myself!

If you have some construction experience and keep your yard shed to overall dimensions of building material. ( plywood, stud height and rafter length.) to keep waste to a minimum. It would be less expensive to build your own and for the most part better built. Some of the sheds you can buy are cheaper in more ways than just price.
