Probably because it takes up space and memory and its FREE. I dont trust free things. I would just get rid of it and install mcafee or norton.

Try some things to make your computer more efficient. You can find them under MY COMPUTER, right click on your C local drive and then click on properties.

1) Do a disc compression it will compress all your files
2) Do a disk cleanup. It will get rid of all your temp files that your computer does not need.
3) Do a disk defragment. It will move all your fragmented files.
4) Go to Start menu then click on RUN, and then type msconfig and then hit ENTER. Under the start up tab, uncheck programs that you dont want running in the background that usually loads when you start Windows.

And you might want to upgrade and add more RAM into your computer. Memory definitely helps.

Your anti virus program, whatever the make, is a program running in the background. All programs use some processing power to run.

However, an anti virus program requires a little more than most. Depending on your settings, it may be configured to scan files accessed by your computer as you read them, or scanning as you save them. This extra time will slow your system down a bit.

You can speed things up by limiting what it scans, such as not scanning compressed files, or safe file types, such as TEXT files, Pegs, that type of thing. I would suggest you speak to someone in the know to get a good list of things you can skip scanning.

However, this problem is not just limited to AVG, but to all scanners. In fact, the better the scanner, the more it slows it down as it means it is scanning and detecting from more files. OK, that last sentence is more theory than fact, but it's something that may ring true.

The best way to speed things up is to use a faster machine. I know that sounds obvious, but the slower the machine's processor and hard disk, the more it seems to slow down.

Any antivirus that provides resident protection (meaning it's always runing in the background) will slow down any PC to some degree, because it's scanning files as they're opened. While you could disable this feature, it would make your PC much more vulnerable to a virus, since there would be nothing running to automatically detect its attempt to infect the PC.

mcafee and Norton are the worst for slowing down ya PC and lap-top, they are terrible, avg is usually very good unless you have another anti-virus prog running at the same time which you don't know about, cos you should only have one running cos they will clash and slow your system down real bad.

Hi. I have the same problem with my laptop. The best solution is to click "Start" then "Run", then type in MSCONFIG and then click RUN. You then need to click the start up tab, then uncheck the two files "avgcc" and "avgemc". This should prevent the software from loading on your computer startup, and therefore in turn spead up your laptop as it is not dealing with as many processes.
Hope this helps
Nick
