Since you only know smoke on the water, you only know their most famous lineup, featuring ian gillian as a singer. Their best work, in my opinion, lies before they recruited gillian, and had rod evans as a singer. They recorded three albums, the best of which being "the book of taliesyn", and if you like gillian-deep purple, get "Machine Head". When Gillian was dumped, "Burn" was a decent album with new singer David Coverdale.

I only know "Smoke on the Water," too, but at least I know that Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd!

Go for "Machine Head" ... personally I prefer the old Whitesnake stuff more (i.e. Live in the Heart of the City).

I have "Machinehead" and thoroughly enjoy it. My favorite track on there would be "Lazy". (The album does include Smoke on the Water)

I don't think about them at all. If you want to get into some classic rock, try some Traffic or BTO.
