I think that the above answers cover what "The Golden Bough" is about. I can tell you that the full edition is in at least ten volumes (it's been a long time since I read it!), but there are several abridged one-volume versions, which are probably easier to get into. It's a fascinating read, although is rather dated these days, and says as much for the times that it was written in as its subject matter.
