There should be an estimate of how many mpg the car gets on the window sticker.

Look for 25 or better.

Check the city and highway EPA mileage ratings for that particular model at Edmunds.com. Whether or not the car is maintained properly will determine how much fuel it uses, as well. Ask for maintenance records.

check the m.p.g. figure, e.g. 30 m.p.g. means that car runs 30 miles per gallon. it is written on that car window sticker.
