If someone in the UK uses an email account in Germany to send email to an account in the UK, will the senders IP address be German? and therefore the IP address of the senders machine is unknown?

Is it always possible to know the IP address of the senders machine?

No. There are way too many ways around this. An easy method that any joe user can deploy is to use iphide software or obtain proxy from many different source points across the globe. But, if you really want to know the inside scoop, you'll have to recruit the expertise of a veteran spammer.

It is not always possible to know the IP address of the sender's machine. In fact, in the case of illegitimate email, most of the headers are forged.

The only thing you can be sure of is the FIRST ip address in the header other than your own ISP, which is placed there by your ISP to show where your ISP received the email from.

In a legitimate email, this will be the IP address of the email server that sent your ISP the email. If you had a problem with the email (ie, it's spam), then your ISP would notify the other ISP, and that ISP would take whatever action was deemed appropriate.

The problem is that now headers are forged, because the spam engines don't respect the header rules. They just want to deliver their message over and over again.

If all ISPs would get serious about blocking spam, then the problem could go away. Many don't care, or are ignorant of what they can do.

If you're using Yahoo! mail, click the "Full Headers" link at the bottom of the email you're reading, then at the top of the headers, note the 12 digit figure that's in brackets next to
X-Originating-IP: [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
Copy this IP address into the site below - that will tell you which ISP owns the IP address of the computer that the email came from, even if it's web mail, wherever the computer is...if you need to report them for spamming, then the contact for that is there as well.

No, you can only see the e-mail server's ip address from the UK. The ISP he uses would be the only person to know his IP address.
