Two months after my ex left me, I had a car accident from which I recieved 7,000+ from the insurance for replacement of a vehical, my ex kept comming over and refused to leave me and my family alone ( he had pulled a gun on me prior to this, and there was a EPO). He said if I didn't promisse to give him $500.00 out of my money he would spread lies about me, and hurt me and my family, even threatened to burn the house down and kill my dog. So I signed a paper saying I would, as long as he didn't hurt me, myfamily, our home ,and my dog. In the divorce he was ordered to pay some doctors bill of mine$50.00, now he refuses to pay them until I pay him the $500.00. What should I do, is it blackmail?

Depending what state you live in, and the exact law regarding assault/battery and extortion, he has probably committed one or more felonies. You should consult with your local police and prosecutor's office. In addition, assuming you used a divorce attorney, you should consult with him or her about what happened so that it can be addressed by the judge in the divorce case. If you don't already have ADT, it's worth the $19.95 per month for a little piece of mind for the protection of yourself and your home. The "agreement" to pay him $500 is not binding (it was signed under duress, and there is no valid "consideration" on his part. (Consideration is a term that means, basically, he didn't give you anything for the $500 -- and a promise not to do something he has no right to do is not consideration).

Good luck... call the police!

i suggest you contact the police and a lawyer. it's blackmail and harassment. if you can somehow get your hands on that paper you signed you can give that to the police as evidence and you can get a restraining order. he may even get jail time for making those kinds of threats. do not give him the money. also let your family know of the the situation so they can be wary and protect themselves and notify you of any shady things they notice. a lawyer will also be able to help build a better case against him should you be dragged into court.

You need to discuss this with your attorney and file papers with the police and stop letting him push you around. Change the locks, get a security system and a meaner dog that can attack on command.

Yes it is! Tell the police everything. File for a temp restraining order. If he contacts you or your family, report it to the police and he will be arrested. Do it now before somebody or something is killed.

Go to the police. This is harassment. Also contact a local women's counselling center. You need a support group to keep this predator from making your life miserable.

I would take some of that money and buy a gun for your protection. Next thing, get a lawyer.

No it is not blackmail, it is EXTORTION.

just like the mob saying to a business owner pay me "protection" money and your business will not be burned down.

extortion plain and simple.

blackmail is when they actually have dirt on you, and you pay them to shut up.

call the cops
