You should definitely go with Mac. I have owned windows PC's all my life, and just started using a mac and it's amazing. You can do everything a PC can do, any major software that is necessary, like microsoft office, is available for Macs, and the no virus thing is a very good advantage!! I have gone through two laptops already in the last three years because they crash, or get a virus.
Go to an apple(MAC) store, and then a PC store, and ask them to tell you why their computer is better. I did the same, and nobody selling a PC gave me a good enough reason, after I told them about all the problems I had in the past.

I don't know how efficient the Windows OS for Mac will be, so I can only safely say that you should stick with a PC with Windows. The reason I say this is because if you're college you really don't want to have to deal with technical problems on top of studying for your classes.
Mac is generally useful for graphic-oriented tasks, but the software choices for it is much more limited than a PC.

Make sure you have balanced spec on your machine; if you want you machine to handle a lot of memory, which means you'll want a good amount of RAM, make sure you have a pretty fast processor 1.8GHz + (a really speedy processor would be 2.16+). You can settle for less as long as you're aren't asking your computer to more than it can. You need to have specifications that support each other. That's the main thing.
High-powered machines aren't going to have chips like Sempron or Celeron. They're are cheap, though, not ideal.

Money is going to be a factor. If you want high-line, you're going to pay high-line prices. There's some nice performing notebooks out there, though.
You might be surprised that many companies have the same sources for their materials. That's something to keep in mind.

Though I'm not recommending the company, I have a Dell. The site of the producing company is going to have the latest and greatest models at the greatest price. Other online stores may have configurations that fit you're need and budget. Sam's Club/Costco might have just what you need.

Hmm . . . That's rather lengthy, but I hope it helped in some way.

For projects, entertainment, and productivity, I'd say a Mac. But be careful, if you have software such as Office 2003 it will not work. Many games also may not work. But on the other side, Macs come with AppleWorks, which is very similar to Microsoft Office Proffesional. It also comes with iLife 06 which has programs to create movies, music, and has a very good presentation program (Keynote).

For speed, design, and projects, choose Mac. For productivity, entertainment, price and internet, choose Windows

It is highly dependent on the type of work you wish to do on the computer. Macs are easy-to-use and pretty excellent machines for multimedia and graphics design. PCs are more widely used in the workplace however, and probably have a wider range of games developed for it. In either case, both operating systems have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), so that should not be your concern. In fact, Mac OS X is a pretty nice operating system, and Macs do allow you to run Windows and UNIX potentially, whereas you might be able to run Linux on a PC, but not Mac OS X, as far as I know. I personally use PCs the most, but I bought a Mac iBook for my wife recently, and we love to use both.

Chose a windows.
you probably did not know this but part of apple the people who make macs is owned by windows because apple was going to be bankrupt but windows pulled them out.
second windows are just as go as macs but ALOT of stuff is not compatible with macs and if you do find something for mac you will be paying twice as much if you got it for windows
for example office xp for windows is $200 if you get that same office for apple it is $400
so you sure actually consider a windows

Find out what most students use at the college. Some colleges are MAC oriented, and some are mostly PC. Both are good for games, school work, music, etc. However, if you don't have what most others (and the school) are using, then you'll be left out anyway. It will be difficult to share files, and very difficult to find help fixing any problems that arise.

Get the best of both. The MacBook laptop comes with Mac OSX (a unix based OS) and you can download Boot Camp so you can install Windows XP (needs to be purchased separately). Then you can boot to either.

Most PC's come with lame software installed and so you need to purchase or download software to make them usable. The Macbook comes with software to edit music, videos, pictures and write DVD's playable on a regular DVD player; not to mention its compatible with your iPod.

Microsoft Office can be purchased for about $100US for either OS (use your student discount). The MacBook comes with wireless and bluetooth connections and is ready to be useful out of the box. Use your student discount to buy it and you can save another couple of hundred $US.

One final word. If you're big into games, go Windows; if you're big into entertainment, go Mac.

Windows. It really depends on what you are used to using. I'm used to using Windows and I can find the answer for anything wrong in Windows, but I don't have a clue about Mac. Go with what you've used most of your life.
