I live in Pensacola Florida and want to get out of the pool and train in the bays. I plan on trying to make open water swimming my new sport but want to correctly mark out severl different courses for training purpouses. I have a kayak that I could use to survey the course but how? Also, do they make maps that have miles that are not nautical marked on maps?

A GPS is a good solution, and since you seem to be outdoorsy, you may already have one. Collect your data as a series of waypoints, two for a shore-to-shore straight line, more for a non-linear route. Depending on your make/model, there are software packages that will allow you to calculate distance between waypoints.

A simpler and still reliable solution is a ruler and topographic map. There ought to be complete 1:50,000 scale map coverage of your area. Find a local map dealer, or go to the USGS (US Geological Survey) website to order.

ITs between the hardest activities.. open water races are generally no longer very precise both.. i imagine in case you actually had to do it precise, you are able to set up bouys with measured rope tying them jointly.. ( then shrink the rope ) If I were you i'd swim for time.. particularly than distance
