First of all let me say that i honestly think that real horror is not produced in america anymore. Actually only in asia and europe is where real horor movies come from lately.
I recommend you the following: Three extremes.
its a collection of movie shorts from three of the best directors in asia today.
A tale of two sisters; its a korean movie, but its a horror story unlike any other, in fact its gonna be remade in USA soon.
The Devil`s backbone: a mexican movie set in spain during the franco regime.
Save the Green Planet: not much of a horror, but it will scare you with its twists and turns, also its a funny movie.
Haute tension : its a horror story from france which by today standards is pretty good.

Modern American horror films focus more on gore and sex than actaul fear and physhological terror. If you look at the current thread of horror flicks released, they are either a massive gore-fest emphasizing the detail of the damage done or a remake from a foreign idea (as of late, Japan has been "tapped" for horror remakes or late American releases).
Nowadays, the imagination that it took to deliver a top notch horror is gone on both ends of the movie. Filmmakers just can't seem to grasp a GOOD and novel idea regarding this now fledging genre. Audiences want more skin and blood, sacrificing the imaginative aspect that would deliver a stronger experience into the realm of fear.
Why was Alien so scary? What about The Exorcist? Even The Ring was extremely provocative withits psychological development. Scary movies have a stronger effect on those who possessed an imagination and allowed it to run wild. Back when it was first released, the idea of Dracula was so frightening that most of the back story and even the title had to be altered. That is why the first vampire movie was named Nosferatu.
Culture has taken a once mighty genre and demeaned it to a series of blood and guts scenes slapped with horny teenagers who you want to see slaughtered. Hell, when I first saw Valentine (and only saw it once in theaters), I was rooting for the killer.
I wish I could recommend a current horror flick, but perhaps you should look into years past to find a quality horror movie if you want to have a chance to be scared.
A couple others that may peak your interest outside of those mentioned (not including Valentine)could include Rosemary's Baby and John Carpenter's The Thing. Also, check into suspense/thrillers like Seven and Silence of the Lambs, since they had an eerie aura about them.

House of Wax... not to bad
Hills Have Eyes... pretty decent
Silent Hill.... Ok for a video game remake
Hostel.... whatever! I've had bowel movements scarier!
Two pretty good horror movies worth seeing IMO are :
High Tension.... it is french but its dubbed in English, very good though.
Wolf Creek.... made in Australia, and damn creepy! Downside is it is very slow in the beginning.
