Other than the biological reason of not letting humanity go extinct, I'm not entirely sure yet. (Ok, so a lot of people have them because they boink like rabbits with no thought of the consequences. Let's not go there or I'll be ranting until next year. :P)
I've never really understood why people like babies so much. Everone's all "that's such a CUTE baby!" but I fail to see how something that drools all the time and craps itself and barfs if you look at it wrong can be cute. I wouldn't mind having a kid nearly as much if I could skip the pregnancy and baby part and have it instantly be old enough to start teaching it fun stuff and listen to all the cute funny stuff it'd start saying when it could talk. Ok so there's adoption, but then it wouldn't actually be MINE, and I'm kinda curious how my genes and my guy's genes would mix. Though that thought's kinda scary too, because our kid might end up even smarter than we are. Doing calculus at age 6! Eeeek! :P

For our own satisfaction and self-importance. To over populate the world. To spend exhaustive amounts of money on. To allow them to destroy others leisure time by screaming and misbehaving in public places. To feel proud of ourselves - oh, we can make babies, aren't we special?!
Can you tell I'm in the child free by choice camp? ;) Please, nobody tell me how selfish I am, or what I'm missing out on. I enjoy children, I just do not wish to become a parent. And I wish more people who did want to be parents would adopt children who need good homes.
And I really hope nobody says you'll have no idea until you have a child of your own, because I would think that if you wanted a child enough to go through pregnancy, you would be expecting to love your child and look forward to raising them. You shouldn't just have a baby placed in your arms on the day their born, and think "Wow, I'm really glad I did this because I love this kid so much!" You should have thought that all along...

I think that the only reason we have children for in this world is to try to stop us from getting down and dirty with each other.

There is no rational reason to have kids; they cost astronomical sums of money, ruin your life by imprisoning you in a world of infantile things, embarress you in ten thousand little ways, stink, break your stuff and steal the stuff they don't break, ask for money for crap, monopolize your TV and misplace the remote, wreck your career by getting sick all the time, scare off your friends with their tantrums and grow up to tell you how much they hate you and how it was that YOU ruined THEIR life.
I have two.
I couldn't imagine my life without them... : )

If there were no children, there would be no next generation, and so unless everyone gained immortality, the world would be evacuated of all human life.

We have children for the glory of God. Each child brought into being reveals God's glory through their God given differences and talents.

In today's society, I honestly don't know.
When I was little, it was so parents would have somebody to change the channel on the TV. Now, with remote control, why do we need them?

The biological reason is simple: to procreate our species and ensure our species survival. If you can show me 1 organism that does not reproduce, then I can show you 1 species that is going extinct fast!
