I'm looking for a breed that is quite common (at least here in the UK) to help my little cousin with her scrap book.

All I can tell you (I don't know much canine terminology I'm afraid) is that these dogs are fairly large bt not 'giants', and in shape and size look like a combination of labrador/greyhound. Very athletic looking.

They are uniformly a soft beige/light chocolate colour (hazel?), very short glossy fur, and their most striking deature is that their eyes match their fur almost 100%

What can you tell me about the dogs despite thier name (eg, temprament, history, habits etc etc).

Thankyou!

The dog that I think U are speaking of is a relatively modern and very popular breed of dog. Today it is one of the most common family dogs as it is easy to handle, very tolerant and does not require very much of the owners, other than regular exercise. They are active and fun-loving but also exceptionally patient, as befits a dog bred to sit quietly for hours in a hunting blind . Other characteristics related to their hunting heritage is a size suited for scrambling in and out of boats and an inordinate love for cool water.

The breed was originally developed in Scotland, at "Guichan", near Glen Afric, the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks (pronounced "Marchbanks"), later Lord Tweedmouth . For many years, there was controversy over which breeds were originally crossed; especially popular was a romantic story concerning the purchase of a whole troupe of Russian sheepdogs from a visiting circus. In 1952, the publication of Majoribanks' breeding records from 1835 to 1890 removed all doubt.

It is called a Golden Retriever if I'm not mistaken.

Weimaraner
The Weimaraner is a sleek, moderately large, athletic dog with beautiful lines and a short, fine, smooth gray coat. All shades of gray are accepted. The head and ears are a bit lighter in color than the rest of the body. The head is long and aristocratic and the muzzle is strong. The eyes are amber, blue-gray or gray - with an intelligent expression, and the nose is gray.

It almost sounds like you are describing a Boxer. My cousin has one and they are very alert dogs and great for protection. The ones I've seen are very friendly and active but can also have the occasional mean streak. Check out some of the sites I've listed. I hope this helps

I know some one who had one and wasnt happy when it slouched up the patio window in the sun and went straight through it as they grow huge and weigh about 14 stone ish. !!!! eat loads too.

Dogs generally have 4 legs, unless involved in some unfortunate accident. They are touted as man's best friend, and have no sweat glands, hence the panting.

Try looking up the Irish Wolfhound in Google Images.

Otherwise, look for water terriers.
