I have lived in Phoenix for 20 years. How do we handle the heat? The same way we handled the winter in Ohio - stay indoors a lot. At least you don't have to dress in five layers and spend half an hour scraping the ice off your car to go anywhere. It is really only hot for 3-4 months, and the rest of the year makes up for it.
I have to comment on the answer about gangs. There is never anything in the news about gang activity. I think it is very limited. Stay away from the near south and near west side areas and you will be fine. There is relatively little crime in Phoenix for a big city.
Also, the tap water depends on the city you live in. I live in Phoenix proper, on the south side of South Mountain Park, and the water is drinkable. Some of the suburbs' water tastes bad, though. All the water here is hard water - very full of minerals - so a filtration system helps.

I lived there for 8 years, its been 16 years now since we have moved so the area I know has probably changed. It is HOT in the summer, I personally hated it. Only one way to stay cool, stay inside in the AC. I remember literally burning my feet one summer when running outside real quick to get something. I used to pray for rain, and when it hit 40 in the winter I was in heaven! Not trying to be a downer here, but you did ask :) I do not regret living there, it is a beautiful area. Make sure you check out the Superstition mountains, they are beautiful. I do remember that there never seemed to be much going on in Phoenix, not much to do, but I did have two small kids and it has been 16 years so I am sure there has been some growth in that aspect.
footnote...I think it was in April when the radio stations would start having their "What day will it first hit 100 degrees contests" and I know they used to fry eggs on the sidewalks in downtown Phoenix! Good luck and Stay Cool....

I've never lived there but have visited a few times as far as the heat do what you would do anywhere, stay indoors during peak sun hours, wear cool moister absorbing clothing, and stay hydrated. Now about hydration DO NOT drink the tap water!!!! It tastes disgusting you have to use bottled. So be prepared. Other than that Phoenix is an O.K. place.

The good. Very warm Not Humid at all. Golf Season year round
The Bad. people are not out in the summer due to the heat. where is the grass? everything is generally rocks
The Ugly. When it rains, people act like it is a blizzard. They stop in the roads and pull over. And it only does it like 2 or 3 times a year

the good, the bad and the ugly-well, i'll get it over with and tell you that we have to suffer through intense heat for many months out of the year, but it sounds like you already knew that...i usually either stay in air-conditioning , go swimming, or just get out of the state all together when i can, during summer months.
the good part is when late fall rolls around, then it starts cooling off and we can actually enjoy our state (whether it's biking, hiking, having a picnic or anything else outdoors)
we do have alot of lovely areas for sightseeing (sedona and the grand canyon) and the nightlife is always entertaining.
good luck with your move!

I remember driving thru there in july once... it was 11:59 in the PM, and the temperature was 99. So I kept going, and never looked back. I suppose there are good things about the place, as long as it's not between May and October when it's hard to breathe cause it's so hot. Kinda burns the linings of your lungs.

The heat is not the problem it all the gangs that are there. you need to choose the house that your going to live in very carefully. Their are a lot of gang related crimes in Phonix. Make sure that you have a pool, so you can stay cool in the 115 degree summers.
